There are two required statements for FDA menu labeling whose purpose is to help consumers. The first statement, known as the succinct statement, is intended to provide context to calorie listings by stating a general amount of total daily calories (2,000) that are used for nutrition advice. The second required statement for FDA menu labeling informs the customer that additional nutrients (beyond calories) are available. Restaurants must include the two required statements for FDA menu labeling on their menus and menu boards.
Required Statement #1
The succinct statement which provides context about calories in a total daily diet must say:
- “2,000 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice, but calorie needs vary.”
If the statement is for a kids’ menu, you may use the following as a substitute for, or in addition to, the succinct statement:
- “1,200 to 1,400 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice for children ages 4-8 years, but calorie needs vary.”
Required Statement #2
In addition to calorie information, restaurants are required to include a statement regarding the availability of the additional written information which lets customers know additional nutrients are available upon request. This statement of availability should state:
- “Additional nutrition information available upon request.”
The additional information required upon request includes:
- Calories and Calories from Fat
- Total Fat, Saturated Fat and Trans Fat
- Cholesterol and Sodium
- Total Carbohydrates, Fiber and Sugars
- Protein
This information must be available in written form and on the premises of the restaurant.
Format Requirements for Statements
Both statements are required to appear on the bottom of the first page with menu items, and they must be immediately above, below, or beside each other. In addition, they must follow the below format requirements. They each must appear…
- Prominent and in a clear and conspicuous manner
- In a type size no smaller than the smallest type size of any calorie declaration appearing on the same menu or menu board
- In the same color or in a color at least as conspicuous as that used for the calorie declarations
- With the same contrasting background or a background at least as contrasting as that used for the calorie declarations
